How does DVD-to-Pocket PC work?

This software allows you to put a movie from a DVD on your Pocket PC in five simple steps. What you need is:

- PC with Windows XP and built-in DVD-player

- 1 Gigabyte of free space on your C:\ disk (for a 100 minute movie) to store a temporary file

- Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 2003

- Memorycard (Compactflash, SD or MMC) of at least 128 Mb.

On a 128 Mb Compactflash or SD-card you can store movies up to a 100 minutes. For longer movies and for better picture quality, a bigger memorycard, such as 256 or 512 Mb is needed.

Quick Guide

[1] Put a DVD in your desktop PC, click Open and select the Title (the one with the longest duration)

[2] Choose between High Quality (if you have 256 Mb memorycard) and Normal Quality (if you have 128 Mb)

[3] Click Action and the PC will start converting.

[4] After a couple of hours, the file DVD.wmv will be on your desktop and you can copy it to your Pocket PC using Active Sync (slow) or a memorycardreader (fast).

[5] On your Pocket PC, open the Windows Media Player and play the DVD.wmv file. From the Tools Menu, select Audio and Video Settings and set Play video in full screen to Always.

Your DVD will now play in full screen landscape mode with stereo sound. Enjoy the movie !!

Extra Features

[1] Foreign language audio dubs are available from the Options Menu. Select Sound & Subtitles, and from the window that opens, select your language in the Audio Settings section.

[2] Subtitles are available from the Options Menu. Select Sound & Subtitles, and from the window that opens, select your language in the Subtitles section. For better readability, use 'Text Offset' 22 and select 'Original Colors'. This will put letters further apart (so called character spacing). For even better reading of the subtitles, we recommend you use the 'Zoom' function.

[3] Zoom allows you to better fit a widescreen feature film on the tv-sized screen of the Pocket PC. The software will blow-up the picture and crop both sides to fit the screen's 4:3 aspect ratio. You can select Zoom from the Options Menu, under Video Size.

[4] Start after allows you to begin converting after a specified amount of time. For example if you want to encode only the second half of a 90 minute movie, you would start after 45 minutes.

[5] Stop after allows you to encode a part of a movie and then stop before the end. For example if you would like to encode the first half of a 90 minute movie, you would stop after 45 minutes.

You can use Start After & Stop After to chop movies in parts. For example if you have a 64 Mb memory card, you could use these options to fit a half movie on the card, watch it, delete it, and then put the second half on it.

[6] Test Run encodes 1 random minute of a movie. You can use it to check audio, subtitles or other settings before you convert the whole movie, saving precious time if something goes wrong. Usage: Open a DVD, choose Options\Special\Test Run from the menu. No need to press Action.

[7] Step 2 Only repeats the second step of the conversion process. If you have a 'hang' during the second step or if you have to quit the program for whatever reason, you can try this option to finish the DVD conversion, without having to extract the whole DVD again, saving many hours of time. Usage: Eject the DVD, restart the software, choose Options\Special\Step 2 Run from the Menu.

[8] Reset All is a very important Menu item. It solves many '.IFO not found' errors. Usage: First open a DVD, select a Title, then select Reset All to return all the settings to default. Follow the instructions (twice 'default' and 'ok'), then press Action.
