iPresenter for Powerpoint - FAQ

1) What do I need to run iPresenter?

You need:

  • The iPresenter PC software
  • The iPresenter iPhone software (App Store)
  • A PC with Windows XP, 2000, NT or Vista
  • Microsoft Office Powerpoint (not Powerpoint Viewer, but the Microsoft Office version)
  • An iPhone or iPod Touch
  • Both the PC and the iPhone need to be connected to the same network via WiFi or cable.

2) Where do I start?

A) Download the iPresenter PC software here and install it. It contains all the necessary files (including some required Microsoft and Apple system software).

Start the software by opening the iPresenter shortcut in the Start Menu of Windows, or from the shortcut on your desktop. iPresenter will run as a background service in Windows. You will notice a small icon in the bottom right corner of your screen (picture below):

You may quit the PC application by right-clicking on the icon and choosing Exit from the pop-up menu.

B) Download and install iPresenter to your iPhone from the App Store.

Run it by pressing the iPresenter icon from your home screen.

C) Make sure both the iPhone and the PC are on the same local network. This can be a wired or wireless network. If both devices are connected to the internet, through the same accesspoint or switch, they most likely share the network, so you should have no issues.

D) On your iPhone: choose the PC which hosts the Powerpoint presentation from the list of PCs shown.

'Show Slide' lets you control the preview on the iPhone.

Current slide will show a live view of the Powerpoint presentation on the iPhone, you see the same slide on the iPhone as shown on the PC or projection screen. Attention: there may be a small delay between the click and the live view on the iPhone. This depends on the speed of your connection.

Next Slide will make the iPhone stay one slide ahead. You get a preview of the next slide in the queue.

'Use Sound' controls the feedback on your iPhone from your clicks through the presentation.

Click will make a click sound audible everytime you press the next of previous slide button.

Vibrate will cause a vibration of the iPhone everytime you press the next of previous slide button.

Off means no feedback is given

4) I'm having trouble connecting...

Please check the following:

  • Is the iPhone WiFi connection enabled?
  • Is the iPhone connected to a network via WiFi?
  • Is the PC connected to the same network, switch or accesspoint, as the iPhone?
  • Was the PC sofware correctly installed, including Apple Bonjour technology?
  • Is the PC software running (you should see the iPresenter icon in the lower right corner of your PC screen and a text balloon: "Waiting for iPhone to connect"
  • Is the iPhone software running?
  • Is Powerpoint running?

If you still can't connect, try setting up an Ad Hoc network, as explained in section 6 of this manual.

If you keep having connection problems, please send the log file to our support department. You will find the iPresenter log file on your PC, in the system tray menu.

Right-click on the icon and choose Show Log from the pop-up menu. Copy the content of the log window and paste it into an email message.

5) I'm connected, but I can't control Powerpoint

Please check the following:

  • Make sure your presentation is not opened by 'Powerpoint Viewer'. It needs to be opened by Office Powerpoint. Powerpoint Viewer is a free viewer from Microsoft, but it doesn't support remote control.Sometimes, Powerpoint Viewer will open your presentations, even when Office Powerpoint is installed. In that case, start Office Powerpoint and then open the presentation document from the File Menu.
  • You may be using a very old version of Powerpoint, prior to Powerpoint 3.0. iPresenter needs at least Powerpoint 3.0.
  • Try setting up an Ad Hoc network as explained in the next section (6) of this manual.

6) Using a direct iPhone to PC connection (Ad Hoc Network)
It's also possible to use iPresenter directly over WiFi without connecting via an intermediary switch. You may use this in situations where you're unable to connect both your PC and the iPhone to the same accesspoint. It's a bit harder to setup, but it will give you remote control even in situations where no WiFi node can be found, so you don't depend on hardware being available on the location where you need to give your presentation.
For this to work, you need to setup an Ad Hoc network between your PC and iPhone. Please take these 6 steps (on Vista):

1. Access the Network and Sharing Center using Start » Network » Network and Sharing Center

2. Select Manage wireless networks

3. Click Add

4. Select Create an ad hoc network

5. Enter iPhone Powerpoint as Network Name, No Authentication, Save this Network and then Next.

6. On your iPhone, go to Settings / WiFi and choose iPhone Powerpoint from the list.

You're now connected to the PC. Start iPresenter as usual, on both the iPhone and the PC. Run Powerpoint on the PC. You should now be able to select the PC network from your iPhone, open the presentation and control it.

Next time you'd like to use the Ad Hoc network, you don't have to set it up again. Go to Start Menu \ Connect To and double-click the iPhone Powerpoint network.

7) Can I control a presentation through 3G?
No, that's not currently possible. We may add this in the future. You need WiFi now.
